How to Maximize Smartphone Photography Results: Pro Techniques to Get the Best Shots

The portability of smartphones makes them a great option for capturing moments on the go; as such, the majority of photos uploaded to Flicker are taken with smartphones instead of DSLR cameras. Although DSLRs may offer a higher quality of image, a smartphone camera is often more practical because it can always be carried with you, and can be used more often.

To be able to create beautiful pictures with a smartphone, certain things must be considered to ensure the pictures taken are of high quality and sharpness. This is true for both Android and iPhones.

1. The Sun

Smartphones can be trusted in all circumstances; however, the image sensor needs good lighting to work properly, so not every subject can be accurately captured. To get the best exposure, photographers should make sure the sun is behind them or over one of their shoulders when taking a picture. Additionally, when indoors, try to position yourself so that your back is to the window and ensure the lights are turned on.

2. Photo Composition

Capturing stunning images is not simply a matter of selecting the right camera settings. An integral part of the process is the composition of the image. To achieve a professional-looking snapshot, attempt to divide the frame into three sections in a tic-tac-toe-like fashion. Instead of centering the main subject, opt for positioning it in one of the sections.

Note the importance of the background in a photograph. Generally, the background of a picture can occupy up to 65% of the total space. Careful coordination of the colors in the background with the subject can greatly improve the overall aesthetic of the image.

3. Camera App

Many mobile devices feature a dedicated button providing direct access to the camera, thus allowing users to use it with ease. However, some phones do not offer this facility, thus making it difficult to access the camera. This could lead to missed opportunities. If possible, position the camera app in a prominent spot on the phone for easy access. On iPhones, this could mean placing the app on the main home screen or moving it to the dock area at the bottom of the screen. Android users should consider putting their camera app on the home screen for greater convenience.

4. Stability

One of the primary reasons for image blurriness is the lightweight, slim design of a cellphone compared to that of a professional camera. To ensure optimal stillness while taking a picture, use two hands to hold the device, and press your elbows against your body for additional support. Before snapping the shot, take a deep breath and exhale slowly while depressing the shutter button.
